Onboarding
Through a good onboarding process, you as a manager can contribute to increasing the motivation and enthusiasm of the new employees, as well as ensuring that they get the knowledge and training they need to carry out their tasks effectively.
It is also an advantage to involve more employees in the onboarding to ensure training in various areas, as well as to create a network within the business.
Be clear about what is expected and give lots of feedback, so that the employee gets an understanding of how they are performing and what can be done differently. It is about giving clear expectations to create security.
In this article, you will get some tips and advice on how to make the onboarding process as successful as possible, we show this through a step-based model.
Step 1 – Create a structured plan
The first step in a good onboarding process is to create a structured plan for what will happen during the onboarding period, and what is expected of the new employees.
The plan should include agreements about the first day, an introductory meeting with the manager and colleagues, a tour of the premises and facilities, training and knowledge sharing, as well as agreements about a mentor or contact person.
Step 2 – Make the new employees welcome
The second step is to make the new employees welcome and include them in the working environment. This can be done through a positive and inclusive atmosphere, and by ensuring that the new employees feel that they belong to the team from day one.
This can be done by:
- Give a tour and introduce to the premises and facilities
- Provide information about the company, including history, values, goals and strategy
- Provide information about their role and responsibilities, including duties and expectations
- Make agreements about mentoring or a contact person, so that the new employees have someone to ask for help or support
- Involve the new employees in the team through social activities
Step 3 – Make the training effective
The third step in a good onboarding process is to ensure that the new employees receive the training and knowledge they need to perform their tasks effectively.
This can be done through:
- Adapting the training to the individual's needs
- To give clear instructions and objectives for the training
- To involve experienced colleagues in the training
- Using different learning methods, such as theory and practical training
- To provide regular feedback and evaluations during the training
Step 4 – Make sure the new employee feels included
The fourth step in a good onboarding process is to ensure that the new employees feel included in the team and the work environment.
This can be done through:
- To involve the new employees in the team through social activities
- To facilitate that relationships can be established with their colleagues
- Being open to questions and feedback from the new employee
- To ensure that the new employees have opportunities for learning and development at work
- To ensure that the new employees receive the support and help they need to succeed in their new role
Step 5 – Do the follow-up regularly
The last step in a good onboarding process is to ensure that the new employees receive regular follow-up and feedback.
This can be done through:
- Regular evaluations and feedback from the manager and colleagues
- Meetings with the mentor or contact person to review progress and any challenges
- Offer of further training and knowledge sharing
- Support and help to solve any problems or challenges that may arise
